The air was crisp, the peak of summer was slowly leaving the city as days shortened one after another. Cooler breezes came from the north and ushered in the changing season. Leaves of brilliant greens began to tint on the edges as the golden yellows, crimson reds, and dark browns of autumn etched their way slowly across the landscape and forced Summer to retreet. Under the shade of a few well-placed trees was an elder man in a fine suit of grey marked with hints of azure blue who sat upon a picnic table outside the Northpoint Shopping Center. The breezy air lifted the scents of grass and earth around, flicked small seeds and pollen across the roads, and mixed with aroma of a boxed meal of rice and greens, lightly oiled and seasoned.
“Ah, there is nothing as peaceful as a meal all to one’s self after a long morning of helping customers out,” the grey haired man uttered to himself in a peaceful grace before he lifted up his fork to enjoy his lunch. His shop inside was closed for the moment, as it always was like clockwork, every day between 2 and 3 pm.

Spark flew through the air in her fairy size as she looked around her with excitement. Her new home and there were so many things to see! She noticed an set looking male sitting alone eating and she curiously flew closer. Growing in size until she was the size of a human. Her curly blonde hair blowing in the slight breeze.
She giggled at his statement as she folded her burnt autumn leaf like wings on her back and stood behind the guy and looked around. "Indeed it is a beautiful day!" She smiled as she clasped her hands behind he back and swayed on her heels like a child despite her 18 years

The first bite was done as the fey creature announced herself behind the old man. Durance smiled to himself, the same kind of smile one might spot on a feline. He pondered for a moment what she might want of him, if she was a player or just an unassuming creature of the earth like so many appeared. The possibilities were what provoked the faint grin on Durance’s face, the cold blue of his eyes flickering with thoughts.
Durance cleaned his mouth with the tip of his napkin before he spoke, wrapping his fork gently in the napkin before putting it down. “All the better to share with a kind stranger. Would you care for a seat my dear and keep an old man company?” the grey haired man asked in a tone that almost sounded familial. His withered looking hand gestured to the spot across his table.

She turn gold eyes towards him a moment and studied him before giving a single nod and carefully settled down. Brushing her black dress. "Thank you." She smiled politely at the older gentleman. "Do you come here often?" She asked innocently as she waved a delicate hand around them. "I'm new here so I'm quite curious." She smiled emberessed and glanced down at her lap.
Them she startled upon coming to a realization. They haven't been properly introduced! And here she was rambling with her curiosity! "Forgive me we haven't properly introduced ourselves!" She rose to her feet and curtsied with a smile. "My name is Spark Summers! And I'm an Autumn Fairy!" She gave him a bright friendly smile.

A ping of disappointment flashed through Durance’s blue eyes as the girl introduced herself. “I often enjoy my lunch here, Spark Summers,” he utters the name she has given him with ease, even mimicking the inflections of her voice as she spoke it. Where the name true she could feel a pull if you would, a mental tug that would guide her gold eyes to lock with his own.
“The people call me Durance, and I run a modestly successful shop nearby. What brings one of the fey folk to our simple city? Or are you simply helping to prep the trees for the coming of autumn?” he asks curiously and lets his gaze wonder from the black dressed creature to the shade tree that hung it’s leaves above them.

She smiled and blinked at him as she met his gaze. Cocking her head curiously at his question. A frown marring her pretty features. "I don't really know why I can here to be honest....I guess I was lonely." She gave a sad smile. "It's nice to meet someone who doesn't want to harm me." She gave a half hearted chuckle but it died down into a Sigh as she followed his gaze to the tree. "And it's not quite time for Autumn yet. Soon though." She murmured new to herself then to him.

Durance extended a gentle hand to the creature, letting his fingers touch upon her hand to draw her gaze back. “Now why would someone want to harm a lovely girl like yourself? Shouldn’t you be dancing in rings of flowers and leaves with other fey folk?” He offered her a soft smile, that of a man that was watching his own grandchildren dance in grassy fields barefoot. “Autumn will be a welcomed relief. The summers as of late have been too warm for my liking,”

She turned head to look at him and gave another sad smile. "Because I've been hurt before. Long time ago I was captured and kept as a pet for a little girl.... The kind of little girl who would pluck the wings off a butterfly to keep it's beautiful wings." She stated tucking her wings closer to her body instinctively. "And I don't know my fae folk." She murmured. "My memory seems to draw a blank before the time of my capture." She replied solemnly.
"All seasons have their good light and bad light." She commented reaching up towards the trees above and gently touched a leaf that drooped on a low hanging branch. It's vibrant green color turned into a flaming blaze of orange gold and red like the leaves of Fall. "Beauty is everywhere you look. Even in the darkness there is beauty awaiting to be sought out. But I think the simplest of things are the prettiest." She sighed

The old man frowns at the description of the child, his fingers squeeze gently upon her hand. A flash of brief emotion crosses his face as the coldness and callous nature of mortals was once again driven into him. “This old man has seen enough darkness in his years. And he’d rather see the beauty of a creature kissed by the light, if only for a nice change of pace,” he smiles again to her, letting the fae creature see what she wanted to see in his open eyes. “I hope you’ll be staying with us for a while here in Maple Falls.”

She turned to look at him once more and gave a small smile. "Thank you kindly for your kind words." She replied laying her hand on his. "It's been awhile since I've been shown much kindness." She replied softly in thought. "And I do hope that I can have a fresh start here. It's a cute little town." She murmured.

“I’m sure you’ll find it if you look, Ms. Summers.” he spoke the fae’s name again, letting her know that his full attention was upon her. “There’s plenty of places here you can claim as your own. And if you’re ever in any trouble, just say my name. I’ll show up and see what I can do to smooth things over. Now, have you had any lunch my dear? You look as thin as a stick.”

She laughed softly. "Yes I suppose and thank you. Your my first friend I've made since I've come here." She beamed happily and gave him a kind grateful look. "Oh and I'm alright. As a fairy I don't eat much. Besides what I eat isn't something you can easily come by so do not worry." She replied.

“Oh? Pardon the assumption please. So, what do fairies normally consider food?” he asked curiously of the young girl. “Hopes and dreams of the youth?” he asks in a teasing voice. “Or do you suffice purely on air?” he asks before he takes another bite of his lunch. “And I’m sure you make yourself a better friend than an old man under a tree. You must have plenty of persuasive abilities to draw the attention of all the youth in the city. Why, I bet you could have them eating out of your hands if you asked them nice enough.”

She smiled. "Well it all varies on the type of fairies. Some live off of berries and fruit, others vegitation and some like me who drink nectar." She replied.
She blinked at his statement an gave a small giggle. "Even so, I am not that kind of girl. I do not like people who ask but never give in return." She mused. "If I have people around me that are eating out of my hand as you say. It's unintentually done." She replied playing with a strand of blonde curls as she spoke. Her eyes thoughtful.
"Pardon my insensitive question but do you not have other friends around here? You say that you wouldn't make a good friend compared to someone else my age. But in truth, I'm practically as old if not older then you because of my Fairy immortality despite my young age in appearence." She hummed.

“And how old do you think I am my dear?” he asked curiously as he crossed his fingers in front of himself, partially masking his smile. “I don’t have many friends around here. I have contacts, those who owe me favors, those whom I owe favors. I have my work and my interests, but my ‘friends’ haven’t been around for a very long time. I used to have a youth and vigor similar to yours… but the years have not been easy or kind to this old man.”
“No, they haven’t been kind. The youth of this word have forgotten where they and their ancestors came from. They take their current world as a given, ignorant of the strides and effort and sacrifices that were needed to create these little wonders,” he takes out his cellphone and spins it on the table. “A thousand years ago, they would have called this sorcery and I’m not certain if they would’ve been wrong. This device seems like it was made by a bored warlock,” Durance rambles on. “But now, it’s common place. Dare I say, mundane? There’s so little wonder left in this world, it feel so small.”
“This world has little love for old men unless they need something from him. The world loves a young creature, a beautiful creature.”
