Given Name: Durance Forgeron
True Name: Tetsuryu
Apparent Age: Early 50’s
True Age: 3000 some years
Gender: Male
Description: Durance Forgeron maintains the appearance of a man in his start of his declining years with gray hair muddling his once dark head. His eyes are the same color as the seawaters on the clear days and his body is that of a tall and regal looking man who could own anything his looks upon, despite his thinning frame. He dresses in only the finest of suits, shirts, and shoes; normally imported.
His true form is something though far monstrous, that of an ancient beast long thought gone from the world. Perhaps waned from the former glory of ancient texts, the body of the ancient serpent coated in scales of shining metal as long as a bus. Spiked claws and saw like teeth glisten in the light as the moving metal defies logic as no joints appear visible in the jaw and claws, producing a sound of metal grinding against metal and the roar of a beast. He appears as if mercury were suspended in the air and given a feral rage.
Personality: An ancient dragon from times past, Durance is one of the last of his kind still surviving and has done so by between not drawing overt attention to himself and making the right deals with the right people. He is paranoid and suspicious of all things but also enjoys playing games with people and milking them for all their valuables. He is lonely though and finds little solace in the company of mortals for they are like flickering candles in his eyes.
Background: Durance is a creature in hiding, originally a spirit creature that commanded power over the earth and brought metals to ancient men, teaching them the magic of the forge so that they might produce for him objects of power and art from said metals. In more recent times his kind has become hunted, shunned, or worse… simply forgotten. Mortals weakening the power he and his kind hold as they forget the old gods and true magics of the world. He now lives in the Mysterious land of Maple Lake, taking shelter from the world outside and ingraining himself into the city climate and culture. With his abilities he has set himself up as a supplier of raw materials to the ‘talented’ of Maple Lake. He owns the leading supply stores in the Northpoint Shopping Center, selling rocks, metal ingots, geodes, and crystals of various levels of purity and power (For the truly talented). For those who need something more, Durance is willing to trade unique items for items as equally unique. He has made himself indispensable to the current powers in charge of the city and is perhaps a threat as well, knowing where more than a few skeletons are buried and who did the burying. He has established himself as a power broker and head of the The Lodge faction, and takes frequent pleasure is assigning missions to either protect the assets of those who have need of his services and the funds to buy them, or to give others a reason to afford his services.
Faction: The Lodge (Faction Head)
Equipment: An old wooden cane adorned with a metal scaled dragon head. Multiple pairs of fine Italian shoes and custom made suits, studded with rare gems. White gloves fitted with tiny ceramic tiles in the fabric. And old pocket watch from the 16th century marked JVI. Various vintage sports cars.
Abilities/Powers:
1. True Names – All things have a True Name, some are fluid and changes as a creature’s own identity changes. Others are more static, normally for entities that are defined by their reputations and abilities rather than by themselves. Depending how the well one can say someone’s True Name and if one has given the other their True Name a number of effects can be had. The most common of effects is to grab the attention of an entity, alerting it to the location and time the speaker of the entities True Name is. Strong effects can be exerted from discomfort to a level of pain equal to the level of power of the speaker over the entity whose True Name is being spoken.
2. Earth Magic – Control over the earth and her elements, of metal, crystal, rock, clay, and dirt. The earth moves at the whims of those practice Earth Magic. Those who do draw strength from their connection to the earth.
3 Supernatural Durability – Born of Mana and Earth, Durance holds a resilient constitution and endurance. Openly he attributes this to eating healthy, running five miles every morning, and not indulging in certain vices. But most doctors would that only goes so far for a man in his years. In practice his body is able to take beatings, from falling from great heights, most diseases, and even small arms fire without slowing down. Greater effects, such as vehicle crashes, large caliber or armor piercing rounds, and the more virulent of poisons and disease still hinder and slow/weaken him. It just takes a lot of those finish him off for good.
4. Politics - Durance Forgeron has spent much time in Maple Falls, he’s helped those in power reach great heights and has his hands (or claws as it were) in most businesses in the city. Those in power often owe Durance favors as his words and actions and backing can cause their stars to rise to great prominence or fall just as far.
5. Liquid Assets – Between his mastery of the earth and his business connections, Durance has amassed a sizable fortune in both valuable and rare elements such as gold, silver, platinum, various gems, and of course, cash. His own home shows off his wealth but rumors about the town say that his true wealth is in a massive pool under his house for he trusts no banks with his true wealth.
6. Form Change – A spirit of nature, existing in a dual state. One state is human in appearance, that of an aged man of regal bearing. Another that of the classical, serpentine force of nature, crafted from the elements themselves, sprawling out over 40 ft in length and sporting a head the size of a small car. Durance draws upon the elements of earth around him to merge with him, bind with his body and soul to reveal his true power. The larger, most beastly, stronger, ferocious form is something of an energy hog and not very efficient to maintain for long periods of time and draws far more attention than is needed. Also, people tend to not react well to it so the form of Durance Forgeron is used more commonly in day to day actions. But while in his altered form not only does he possess the strength of a supernatural creature of his size but also it multiplies his already superior supernatural durability due to his metal hard scales. Perhaps though his most terrifying ability in this form though is his enhanced mastery of Earth magic on this scale grants him limited control of his own electro-magnetic field. His most common application of this produces sharp bolts of aimed lightning from his open maw.
Skills: Durance has learned and practiced a number of skills over his years, from his favorite pastime of geology to a more casual understanding of jujitsu, meteorology, poker, and mountain climbing.
Weakness:
1. Avarice – Durance has an innate need to own things. The rare and more valuable, the better. He has a hard time if not impossible time turning down a deal that should end up with him getting a truly unique artifact or trinket. It’s also hard for him to part with unique specimens that he’s collected over time, one of his favorites that he keeps on him is a pocket watch, rumored to have once belonged to an ancient king.
2. Terrain Connection – A number of his abilities require contact with the earth or at least are limited without a boundless connection to the ground. Specifically his Earth Magic, Durability, and even his alternate form grow exponentially weaker the further away from a source of earth that he can use. He can suffer some removal or short distance from the ground, say the height of a medium sized tree, but if he is on a boat away from the coastline or flying in a plane then his abilities are limited by the metal and other earth elements available in the transporting device.
